Difference between Broadside and End fire array

In this post, we will see & learn about the basic difference between Broadside and End fire array. First of all the basic definitions of broadside and end-fire array.

Broadside Array

Broadside array is an array that gives a radiation pattern whose main beam is perpendicular to the axis of the array.

In a wider sense, broadside array is a linear or a planar array antenna whose direction of maximum radiation is perpendicular to the line or plane of the array.

End-fire array

An end-fire array is an array that gives a radiation pattern whose main beam is along the axis of the array.

In a wider sense, the end-fire array is a linear or planar antenna whose direction of maximum radiation is along the line or in the plane of the array.

Difference between Broadside and End fire array

S.No.Broad side arrayEnd fire array
1.The array is said to be broadside array if the direction of maximum radiation is perpendicular to the array axis.The array is said to an end-fire array if maximum radiation is along the array axis.
2.In broad side, phase difference α = 0In end fire, phase difference between adjacent element is α= -βd
3.General equation for pattern maxima is
(θmax)minor=cos-1
General expression for pattern maxima is,
(θmax)minor=cos-
4.general Expression for pattern minima is, (θmax)minor=cos-1
П
Genaral expression for pattern minima is,
θ min =2sin-1
5.Half power beamwidth is given by,
HPBW=
degree
Half power beamwidth is given by,
HPBW=53.3
6.Directivity of broad side array is ,
D=2
Directivity of end fire array is,
D= 4
7.Beamwidth between first nulls is,
BWFN=
degree
Beamwidth between first nulls is
BWFN=114.6
degree
8.In broad side array, all elements are equally
spaced along the array axis and fed with current of
equal magnitude and same phase.
In End fire array, all elements are equally
spaced along the array axis and fed with current of
equal magnitude but their phases are different.
9.The radiation pattern of the broadside array is
bidirectional
The radiation pattern of the broadside array is
Unidirectional
10.In broad side array,
φ =βdcosθ+α (since α=0)
Therefore
φ =βdcosθ
In end fire array,
φ =βdcosθ+α (since α=-βd)
Therefore
φ =βd(cosθ-1)
